Today we woke up early and hiked up Dois Irmãos for sunrise. This is the 1st peak of our Vida logo. Whilst it was a little cloudy, it was breath takingly beautiful. It also gave us an opportunity to see Rochina from above - this was mind blowing. We had never really truly understood the size or the lay out of the favela until we this (see picture below).
This trip also gave us a good opportunity to have a look round Vidigal - the neighbouring favela. We had been told that in recent years this favela has become more "gentrified" and from walking around this is clearly true. There were reasonably large houses overlooking some of the best views in Rio. House prices are 50% more expensive in Vidigal then Rocinha and have grown rapidly since the world cup. For example a Hostel bought for £6000 in 2006 is worth millions now????
In the afternoon we went and met the local estate agent. He was a lovely man although none of us spoke Portuguese so communication was done through smiles and Zezinho. Zezinho explained what types of buildings were available and the best options for us. On Wednesday we are going to look at some proporties.
Home cooked meal by Obi's mum was fantastic!
Looking froward to tomorrow. We are going to look at some existing social projects in Rochina.
Fun fact: Rio de Janrio is translated to River of January. This is because when the Portuguese first discovered Brazil, they throught they were going down a river. It actually turned into a big bay therefore Rio de Janerio should be called Bay of January.
